a brush fire threatens homes on bethel island late last night. we'll tell you how crews were able to get this fire under control and why firefighters are worried about dangerous weather conditions moving in today. "mornings on 2" starts right now. welcome to "mornings on 2." you are looking live at bethel island where a fire burned several acres. this comes as much of the bay area is under a red flag warning. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather. steve's here. you are concerned about these warnings. >> well, thunderstorm, lightning would not be good because the ground is so parch. the last thing we need are fires. the bay area looks like the north bay. any of these could wrap back in. sead also up, northern sacramento valley, san joaquin valley, more in line than us. things are -- from las vegas all the way from tahoe to truckee to reno. lake county, mendocino, maybe napa in line. slightly cooler today. yesterday, it was hot. today will be warm to hot to

muggy. partly sunny, partly cloudy, possible possible -- possible showers. foggy on parts of the coast. back to school forecast, we're focusing this time on san francisco. there's pretty good gusts. three reports about 20 miles an hour. most locations are calm. that's not the case in parts of san francisco. 56, 64 we'll go for a high of 68 depending upon where you are in the city. 70 in antioch. upper 60s, 56 in san francisco. there's lot of 60s to 70s. the cloud cover streaming right off the sierra, coming back from the sacramento valley to the north bay and some lightning strikes have developed into fresno. that might develop later on. we have fog going west to east. but the high and mid-level clouds going east to west. fog, sun, clouds, very warm, muggy, humid. clouds building, possible showers and thundershowers. more likely the north bay. it's kind of a broad brush

forecast. here's sal. good morning. we're looking at traffic doing pretty well along the bay area- - bay area, 880 northbound looks pretty good. the bay bridge is backed up here at the bay bridge toll plaza. there are no major problems getting into san francisco. this is obviously one of the biggest commutes we have getting into the city. if you are driving on the peninsula, 101 looks good. 101, san jose. that's a little slow and appears to be a bug on our there. northbound 101 traffic is moderately heavy approaching the airport. it's moving. okay. 7:03. back to the desk. >> it does this on tv. thank you, steve -- sal. right now, calfire is on alert for dry lightning focusing their attention on the dry hills in the east and south bay. ktvu channel 2 reporter, alex savidge is on bethel island with more on a red flag warning now in effect. good morning, alex.

>> reporter: very dangerous conditions. i just talked with the chief of the -- to of -- to the chief of the east contra costa fire district. you can see, it's smell smoldering. five acres were charred. it was actually burning close to homes for a short time last night. crews were able to get it under control before homes were damaged. five acres burned. this was off bethel island near gateway road. the fire was 8:00 last night. the cause of it -- it appears this morning that it had to do with the electrical lines that are running through this area. but, of course, firefighters worried about more flareups with a red flag warning in place. it went into effect at midnight and it covers most of the inland portions of the bay area. that means conditions are ideal for large fires to break out. the forecast is for thunderstorms to move in and that will bring gusty

conditions and the possibility of dry lightning. and of course, you couple that with the brush already extremely dry. you can understand why crews here in east contra costa county and across the bay area are on alert. one neighbor i talked to ear on bethel i -- here on bethel island said he's grateful for the hard work done by firefighters. >> they did a great job. they really did. they were out here on it and knocked it down. if it wasn't for them, it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: and at this calfire station in the south bay, crews are gearing up for a busy couple days with this red flag warning in place. extra firefighters, extra engines, they are all on standby. and starting later on this morning, calfire will station lookouts up on a couple of peaks, in morgan hill and in st. helena, trying to keep an eye out for smoke and start to move toward the fires early on before they get out of control. the dangerous fire conditions will be sticking around through early wednesday morning. >> the red flag warning remains in effect until then.

we'll bring you back out here to a live look on bethel island. this is the chief of the east contra costa fire district. he's checking out some of the hot spots here at this five- acre brush fire that broke out yesterday. luckily, though, they were able to keep it away from homes in this area. live on bechtel island -- bethel island, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> calfire right now says 5,000 firefighters are battling ten different fires across the state. the weather expected to roll in over the next couple of days could make the situation worse. crews are preparing for gusty winds and dry lightning. many of the current fires are burning in remote areas. but others have forced hundreds of people to evacuate. one of those is a wildfire in butte county threatening more than 400 homes right now. the fire is 45% contained at the moment but crews say the shifting winds make it hard to predict. the fire began four days ago and has already burned nearly 2,000 acres. one home and five trailers have

already been destroyed. in southern california, a small grass fire forced the closure of several lanes of highway one. it was sparked by a car fire on the side of the road in calabasas. this caused a backup for miles. the fire burned 170 acres before firefighters got it under control. stay up to date on your forecast whenever you need it by going to ktvu.com and clicking on the weather tab. there you will find your five- day forecast and stormtracker2 radar. 7:07. today, we should find out what caused that deadly limo fire that killed five women on the san mateo bridge back in may. a 1:00 news conference will be held by the chp, foster city fire department and the san mateo county attorney. ten people were in the limo on may 4th. four women and the driver escaped. but five other women, including a new bride, were killed. some of the new 911 calls are expected to be released at the

news conference. a.c. transit workers are debating their next move in a contract dispute that many thought was already settled. the union representing almost 1800 workers over the weekend rejected the tentative contract agreement reached earlier this month. now, the union workers include, bus drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and clerical workers. the workers' facebook page puts the vote at 256 yes votes. 576 no. >> pretty strong no vote. >> what does that say? >> we want something better. >> willing to strike for it? >> i'm willing to do what the union does. >> now, union leaders say they will meet soon and consider their options. a.c. transit management is not commenting yet until it gets official notice about the union vote. 7:08. east bay commuters remember how a.c. transit helped thousands of people get across the bay during the four-day b.a.r.t. strike last month. there's still a threat of

another b.a.r.t. shutdown in october. b.a.r.t. and its unions have not had any contract talks since a judge ordered a 60-day cooling off period eight days ago. the two sides are waiting for a mediator to set a schedule so negotiations can continue. there's been a lot of talk about the salary and benefits. but today's "chronicle" reports the managers are the highest paid in the country. reportedly making $323,000 a year. deputy managers make about $200,000 each. b.a.r.t. managers deny they are overpaid and need to hold down worker costs to pay for system improvements. four people are dead and another seriously injured after a train crashed with a car in fresno. it happened around 2:00 this morning. investigators say the train was traveling about 40 miles an hour when it crashed into the car. investigators are now trying to

figure out what happened. the crash was in an area of a private crossing where only stop signs are installed, instead of crossing arms. at this time, they say it appears alcohol is not a factor. time about 7:10. back-to-school day for thousands of students in san francisco. the police are out making sure they get to class safely. ktvu's tara moriarty, joining us live now to tell us more about this school safety campaign. tara? >> reporter: well, we're near a school zone and we're on goff street. over in this direction, the cars are flying down the hill here. and when they get two blocks down, there's a crosswalk where kids will be headed to john sweat elementary school. police will be there helping to allow kids to make it to class safety and reminding drivers that school is back in session. slow down. this is one spot over the next two days that motorcycle police may be targeting. the san francisco police department will have directed traffic control operations near most public schools.

the enforcement focusing on elementary schools throughout the city targeting the 15-mile- an-hour school zone spill. officers will start cracking down around -- speed limit. officers will start cracking down around 7:00. we've not seen any yet. we're not sure which schools they will target today and tomorrow. it will last for about two hours and then the police will come from 1:30 to 3:30 in the afternoon. the school district is adding more school guards to the today. they have added 45 people to the crossing guard program. they've been added to the streets with high traffic in areas with a history of accidents. now, later this morning, a little bit after 9:00, mayor lee and the superintendent of schools will be at james denman middle school sort of welcoming students as they head back to school this morning. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we have a back-to-school section at ktvu.com. it includes school start dates, news on how to start the school

developing news out of egypt where there's news that former president hosni mubarak could be freed sometime this week. there was no longer any grounds to hold him for a corruption case that accused him and his two sons of embezzingle funds for presidential palaces. mubarak had been released in two other court cases against him. and the violence in egypt continues. there are reports that islamic militants ambushed two buses carrying police officers in northern egypt this morning,

killing 25 of them. nearly 1,000 people have been killed in clashes between government security forces and supporters of former president mohamed morsi since last wednesday. in a few hours, white house reporters will talk about the escalating violence in egypt. some are encouraging president obama to stop giving aid to the military. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the u.s. gives egypt $1.5 billion a year. kyla? >> reporter: and $1.3 billion of that goes to the egyptian military. john mccain and lindsey graham are leading the charge to cut off the military. they are using deadly force on protest, many unarmed. the u.s. helps egypt because it's one of two countries that made peace with israel. if washington pulls the aid it could affect prospects in the middle east.

on friday, president obama called on joint military exercises with egypt scheduled for next month. but some republicans want to take it further and cut off aid. >> when we threaten something as we did that we could cut off aid, as the administration did, and not do it, then you lose your credibility and your influence. >> reporter: defense secretary chuck hagel is scheduled to speak in 30 minutes. we don't know if he will take questions from reporters about egypt. i will be watching his reports live and have developments for you at 8:15. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. a new poll out shows half of all california residents have a hard time paying for healthcare. the poll also says 50% also say their families healthcare costs are higher now than last year. 41% say they are paying about the same. 5% say they are paying less this year. this poll was sponsored by the california wellness foundation as california gets ready for the federal healthcare overhaul that starts next year.

criminals are capitalizing on the date the new heg law takes effect. that's according to the "chronic ql. they are getting e-mails and fake phone calls and visits from people claiming they are enrolling insurers. prosecutors say this scam plagues on a large part of the population who don't understand the details of the healthcare. mark zuckerberg's own facebook was hacked to prove the company has a security flaw. the bug allows someone to post on someone's wall without being their friend. he said he tried to ignore the facebook security team. so he was ignored and posted about the problem on zuckerberg's page. within minutes, the company contacted him and asked for

all right. we have a lot of cloud cover beginning to move in, especially coming in off the low from central california. fog, sun, showers possible mainly between now and wednesday. lightning is the key. fire danger, extremely high. things will calm down thursday and friday. it looks like back to the usual fog, coast. otherwise mostly sunny. still activity in the sierra nevada. just had a report from steve bridges up in the keys. sprinkles or light rain. 60s, very smoky conditions also out towards the sacramento valley, the mother lode from the recent fires. some of that cloud cover beginning to move in. the red flag warning is out until early wednesday morning. we'll see if they extend that or what we'll -- we'll know the

next couple days. we're in line, i think the north bay and everyone else will be going to tuesday. very warm to mild for tomorrow. there's definitely fog there. and a little bit of a westerly breeze. if you are stuck in that, it's not hot at all. for some areas some of the cloud cover coming off the sierra, wrapping back to mendocino county and lake county, i think you are more in line than anyone else. been some lightning strikes down the san joaquin valley that will pick up later. for us, we'll have mostly sunny skies to partly to mostly cloudy. just depending. it's almost wait five minutes weather. had a few reports of rain in mount tam. i don't think anything hit the rain fall. there's our low right off the central california coast. it will move north. as it does, that will start to cool down sol of the higher elevations. there's very warm air. as we go through wednesday, that will start to cool things down. clouds building i would think over towards the north. highs 60s to 90s. if you are in the tropical cloud deck, it's very warm,

muggy and we'll continue this through wednesday. it looks like a little calmer conditions. >> okay. new this morning, olympic track star oscar pistorius was officially indicted on murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend. in the courtroom, pistorius, you see him there, he cried and held hands with his family before that court hearing began. if he is convicted, he faces a minimum of 25 years in prison for the valentine's day murder of his girlfriend. pistorius said he shot her by mistake, thinking she was an intruder. the trial is set to begin next year. we have new information on the u.p.s. cargo deadly plane wash in alabama -- crash in alabama. federal investigators say the jet was operated on auto pilot

seconds before the crash and the auto pilot remained engaged even as an alert signaled the plane was dropping too quickly. still not clear if the pilots tried to disengage the auto pilot and regain altitude. federal workers have been grounded as a result of steep budget cuts. most government travel budgets have been cut by 30% this year. many workers are being told to trade in plane reservations for car rentals and bus tickets. some officials complain not being able to travel to meetings and conferences is impacting the quality of their work. 7:25. five bay area suspects arrested for the alleged kidnapping of a southern california woman. how she escaped and what she's telling police about what yab duck -- abduction. >> reporter: we're live at the port of oakland where truck drivers are blocking the entrance and exits because they are upset over working conditions. we're getting to the peak of the commute.

drivers are protesting this morning. the reasons behind this action. we'll have that in just a few minutes. welcome once again to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather, traffic. steve's right over there. a lot to talk about, steve. >> clouds are increasing especially about from san francisco, oakland, concord, north. i mean they are spinning off the sierra nevada rotating around the low here beginning to funnel in. other areas are mostly sunny. some locations on the coast dealing with the fog. the main idea the next couple of days red flag warning for lightning. that goes until wednesday. we're definitely in the possibility of some of that developing the next few days as long as the low stays south which would be today and tomorrow. 50, 60s. you can see the cloud cover making a line to the east bay and north bay. they will go from partly sunny to mostly cloudy. i think rain will pick up in the sierra nevada. you can see right there coming back in from sacramento.

crockett, clouds are increasing. there's a loot starting to move in -- lot starting to move in, in napa county. some of these clouds rolling in could produce shower activity. highs are dependent on cloud cover. it may be a 10-degree difference if -- if you have a cloud cover or not. we just found something on 280, unfortunately. we'll get to in a moment. let's go to interstate 880 first and northbound and southbound 880 right here. the traffic does look okay. it's not all that heavy getting down to the oakland coliseum. it looks like it could be windy there as steve mentioned, but the traffic itself looks good. bay bridge toll plaza backed up for a 25 to 30-minute delay before you get into san francisco. we have a new crash, northbound 280 at highway 17. this is 280 and it is in terrible shape because of this crash that is reportedly blocking the lanes.

i also have it on the map just to show you the area, so 280, definitely not the freeway to take. in fact, you want to take 101 instead. 101 is doing pretty well. surprisingly well getting up to the valley. are you trying to get to cupertino or sunnyvale? 280 is not the way. 85 and 101 are decent alternates. at 7:30, let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. happening now -- truck drivers are walking the picket lines at the port of oakland. brian flores joins us live with the message the truck drivers want to deliver to the public this morning. good morning, brian. >> good morning, tori. well, many of the truck drivers have been here since the early- morning hours. they've been here. they've blocked both the entrance and exit to the port of oakland this morning. we see long lines of trucks. many have been turned away. others are being stopped at whatever lanes they are in on the roads. there's nowhere else to go. many of the truck drivers, many of them independent, they are upset because they say they are

receiving not enough money to buy or maintain trucks. others are upset over working conditions. many truck drivers have been here since just before 6:00 this morning, blocking the exits from the support hoping fellow truck drivers. ther they've done so this morning. many are independent who depend on grant money from the groups like the bay area air quality to maintain or purchase trucks. some say that money has stopped coming in and they are left to maintain the trucks with their own money. others are upset over port regulations that don't allow bathroom trucks or leave the truck after sitting for long periods of times. some say they could be sitting in the port or inside the port for three, for hours. and that's affecting how much money they make to support their families, they say. >> no vacation, nobody. nobody have it. [inaudible] everybody need to stop over here. >> reporter: the drivers have sent a letter to oakland's

mayor for her response. they say she has yet to do so. you can see some of the trucks here are blocking some of the lanes coming into the port. the workers are -- the drivers themselves are blocking the trucks leaving outside of the port. so this will have an impact on the -- on the movement of shipping goods this morning. still unclear how much impact that will be. we should say that we have reached out to oakland's mayor as well as the portland of oakland for their response. we have yet to hear back. we're live from the poerd of oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:33. san francisco's fire chief has now banned firefighters from using helmet-mounted video cameras. the decision from chief joanne heys-white came after helmet camera images after the air shawna -- after the asiana crash lot month. she says it's an issue of

firefighter and victim privacy. but some people say the more firefighters wearing cameras the better. >> i think it's definitely relevant. we should have it. we want the truth. >> the fire chief's office says this ban is nothing new. it points to a 2009 policy that prohibits firefighters from having harding devices of any -- recording devices of any kind. the city of oakland is launching a nationwide search for a new police chief. mayor jean quan hopes the new chief will be hired and in place as soon as possible. she says the new chief will face a variety of challenges, including persistent violence, scarce resources and a tough political situation. one councilman says he want as chief with a no-nonsense attitude who will ignore the mayor's crime-fighting advice. a man considered a person of interest in the death of an oakland woman is speaking out in a jailhouse interview.

alana said he and sandra coke attended church together the day she was reported missing. they were planning to get married. allah ahe's being -- alana is being held on a parole violation. coke's body was found in vacaville earlier this month. sandra's sister is disputing what randy alana is saying. she says he was the last person scene with my sister but claims he had nothing to do with her disappearance and killing. why would we believe what he has to say? sandra coke's family members say the two dated briefly 20 years ago. she was trying to help him get back on his feet. five bay area suspects, arrested in the kidnapping of a woman in southern california. ktvu's janine de la vega joinings live now to tell us what deputies are saying this morning about this continuing investigation. janine? >> reporter: all of the suspects are from san jose and gilroy. and sheriff's deputies are not sure what they were doing in

southern california. now, they are currently looking through cell phone records to see if -- how long they've been involved in pimping. they don't know yet if this was their first kidnapping. riverside county sheriff's deputies say that 20-year-old ana ceja of san jose is a prostitute who helped four armed men kidnap an 18-year-old woman on the streets of corpton. authorities say she was sexually assaulted by two of the men and driven to a best western hotel in moreno valley, where she was told she would be forced into prostitution. when the men were distracted, the victim escaped to the hotel lobby, where employees called police. deputies call the suspects as they were trying to leave. ibrahim and binhajjyahyaabulmalik, abdubakr horrington and jerry landers were arrested. they were booked along with a female suspect we showed you earlier under numerous charges, including kidnapping, attempted pimping and sexual assault.

the task force is investigating this and plan to investigate to the local task force here in the bay area to see if there are any victims or any links to see if they can share any information to help the deputies in southern california. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. happening today -- accused serial killer joseph naso will make more closing arguments after addressing the jury for hours on friday. naso is acting as his own attorney and says the evidence against him is circumstantial. the former photographer is accused of strangling four prostitutes in marin, contra costa and yuba counties between 1977 and 1994. all of the women had matching first and last initials. he faces the death penalty if convicted. at 11:00 this morning, civil rights attorney john burris will hold a news conference outlining a lawsuit he's filing against the city of hayward on behalf of lester

chambers, blues singer. he was attacked by a woman on stage while performing at a blues festival last month. the 43-year-old, potter, has been charged with felony assault and elder abuse. she told police she has a stress disorder and that a repetitive part of the song chambers was singing caused her to snap. 7:37. new information about a man who fell off a cliff yesterday in half moon bay. the san mateo county sheriff's office now says the 25-year-old man is fighting for his life. he fell a hundred feet down below. this happened yesterday afternoon outside of the ritz carlton hotel. he was rushed to the hospital. at last check, he was in critical condition. also a man accused of rioting after a southern california surfing contest made it easy for the police to track him down. they say he "liked" a picture of himself on a police photo.

police posted photos of more than two dozen rioters. they were hoping for help in identifying the suspects but they didn't expect a trend friend to -- a friend to tag one of the spgs who liked it and shared it on his own page along with a second photo of himself sitting on a police car. jackie speier says new policy by the pentagon are not enough to prevent sexual assaults in the military. >> these proposals by secretary hagel are baby steps. they are good. but they are not -- they are not the best practices. and repackaging what's been wrong in this system for all of these years. >> the proposals include more support for victims but keep the military in charge of prosecution. congresswoman speier is sponsoring legislation to put independent prosecutors in charge of sexual assault claims. she says only about 10% of

reported assaults result in convictions. the u.s. government is having a yard sale of sorts of military equipment no longer needed in afghanistan. after 12 years of war in afghanistan, the u.s. military is $50 billion -- has $50 billion worth of equipment it needs to get out of the country. that's because u.s. troops are leaving next year. you can bid on some of the items on a specs government website, including vehicles, air parts, uniforms and electronics. teams in the america's cup yacht race will be back on the san francisco bay today. on saturday, races were postponed because of high winds. and then yesterday, only one out of two races were held because of more high winds. italy's luna rossa evened up the scorby beating emirates team, new zealand. they had a problem with the boat hydraulics. two more races will be held today and the winner of the

stocks getting off to a weak start on wall street as a wider loss from sacks delivered weak sales. the tech sector is doing okay after intel's stock, which is up 3% right now. the dow is up 13. the nasdaq is up 17. s&p up 2. the turmoil in egypt is starting to have an effect on the price of crude oil. it's setting for under $108 a barrel. crude oil prices have been inching up for nearly a week.

egypt is not a major oil exporter. but egypt controls the soyuz canal and about 4 million barrels of crude travel through the canal every day. so far the price of crude oil is not affecting the price of the pumps in california. in san francisco, gas is $3.93 a gallon and it's more than a dime cheaper in other parts of the bay area. prices dropped a nickel a gallon in the last week and almost 20 cents in the last month. there's still a lot of questions about what happened the night a limo caught fire on the san mateo bridge. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now and pam, those questions may be answered today. >> that's right. there will be an important news conference today to discuss the deadly limo drier and the investigation into -- fire and the investigation into what happened. ten people were in the limo when it burst into flames on the san mateo bridge on may 4th. four women and the driver managed to escape, but five  other women, including a new

bride, were killed. the investigation has discussed the driver's actions during the fire and whether or not he was on the phone having an argument with his wife. there have been comments about the condition of the 1999 town car. we expect many of those issues to be addressed at this press briefing today. new 911 calls are also expected to be released. knew, this will be held at 1 -- now, this will be held at 1:00 this afternoon. the chp, the foster city fire department and the san mateo county district attorney will hold this news briefing in redwood city. ktvu news will be there so we can bring you an update this evening. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. 7:46. this morning, oakland city leaders are calling for an end to the violence after several deadly shootings over the weekend. 12 people were shot in less than 24 hours. three people died. one of those killed was a 39- year-old woman driving to an east oakland mcdonald's saturday night. her boyfriend survived. her 5-year-old son was in the

car. the boy was not hurt and is in the care of child protective services. the shootings have many city leaders asking what can be done to stop the violence. experts say the violence is due to a number of factors including a lack of job opportunities. they say the violence has an effect on the entire community. not just victims' families. parents are struggling to explain the violence to their children. >> everyone is affected by that. not just the people there at the time of the shooting. but everyone around them. their families, their friends, their classmates and neighbors. everyone. >> police have not released a motive or a suspect description in any of the weekend shootings and say they do not appear to be connected. 7:47. more than 1200 firefighters out there battling wildfires in central idaho. they are finally making progress. 2300 homes were evacuated near the resort communities of ketchum and sun valley.

residents say the smoky air is keeping people away and that's bad for business. >> all of the business owners are depressed about it. august is a huge month for everybody, i mean, from coffee shops to ski shops and bike shops. people don't want to get out in the smoke. >> the fire started august 9th when lightning strikes. right now it's only 9% contained. it's burned almost 160 square miles. there is a volcano that erupted in japan sending ash three miles high. this is the highest plume ever reported. now, the ash cloud is still rising. cars and buses still moving through the streets as usual. people are holding towels over their mouths and wearing masks trying to protect themselves from that ash. 7:48. want to check in again with sal and apparently a little slow in the south bay, sal. >> it sure is. northbound 280 is still slow because of some earlier problems at the 17 interchange. you can see from the live

picture here that getting into the valley is going to be slow. we'll show it to you on a map here. i would say that 101 and 85 are the best ways to go. if you are driving on 101, let's say, from san mateo to palo alto, it should be a pretty good drive for you. across the bay, it will be a little bit slow from hayward, union city and fremont. this drive time from 238 to mowry avenue is about 24 minutes here. if you are driving on the approach to the bay bridge getting into san francisco, it's about a 25 to 30-minute delay. no problems on the upper deck. this is busier than it was last week. we're expecting it to get even busier as schools are getting back into session. let's go to steve. >> we have some very low fog for some. some very high, mid-clefl clouds coming in. east to west, there's plenty going on. sunny for some. san jose mostly sunny. fog or sun, clouds, possible showers, thundershowers mainly later on. the time fran monday through

an investigation in independent you aia after a train ran over people in a crowded station. at least 37 people have been killed. several others have been hurt. angry passengers dragged the driver off the train, beat limb and set the train on fire. officials say the train was not supposed to stop. but some people went out on the tracks, thinking they could make the train stop. although the train was granted permission to pass through, officials say the driver is partly to blame. 7:54. we have new information this morning about a house fire in san jose that killed 100 cats. according to palo alto weekly, the home belonged to carol miller. she's president and co-founder of the stanford cat network, a

nonprofit that cares for feral cats on the stanford campus. following the fire, former network members accused miller of animal cruelty and hoarding. she denies the charges and says that animal control routinely checked in on the cats. now the network is in danger of losing its contract with the university. the dog that was found swimming in the middle of the bay off the berkeley shoreline will now stay with a man who saved her life. that's unless the dog's owner shows up to claim her. so far, officials have not been able to track down the real owner. a man was windsurfing when he came across the pup. he flagged down a boater who helped take the dog to shore. the state legislature, close now to a decision on giving the coastal commission power to impose fines. the coastal commission controls development and public access along the california coastline. a bill already approved by the assembly would allow the collision to fine people for damaging habitat, building

good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. let's get a quick look at steve and the high fire danger. is this unusual for august? >> some septemberlike. things are running a little ahead of schedule. this is something we would see in september, not august. but it's here. the low is moving as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. it's sending in bands of clouds. a red flag warning goes until wednesday. it includes us. the national weather service may fine tune this as we get closer. conditions are definitely ripe for a lot of clouds and the point of some thunderstorms. there have been some in the valley in the sierra nevada. 50, 60s, 70s in livermore.

look at the cloud cover just flying off the sierra heading toward the north bay. parts of the east bay. south bay machine. although our -- south bay, mostly sunny. although tom said we have the smell of garlic here. that's true. if you are in san jose or santa clara valley, i smell it, that's why, the wind. lightning strikes calming down now. i think they will pick up later as they start to rotate in. possibility of some showers and clouds building up very muggy, warm, humid inland. but kind of cool by the coast. so temperatures, a big difference here as much as 30, 35 degrees possible as temperatures continue very warm and muggy. showers and lightning, the big concern. here's sal. we're looking at some of the busiest traffic in the bay trying to get in san francisco. it's backed up for a 25, 30- minute delay except if you are in the carpool lane. it's moving. you can see by looking at the traffic flow that it's not as a standstill like it would be if

there was an accident or a falled vehicle on the bridge. also looking at the commute from the livermore valley, it's been steady and slow. you can see some slow traffic between grantline road and 680. just a little bit more than 30 minutes on the stretch. if you are moving in on southbound 80, it's slow from hayward to fremont. most of it is under the speed limit as you can tell by the road sensors and the colors. let's go to 280. we had a crash up near highway 17. if you are trying to get to cupertino or sil, it's slight -- sunnyvale, it's slightly better for you. 85 is doing well up into cupertino. back to the desk. you heard steve, dry lightning could be rolling in as early as this afternoon. calfire is on high alert. ktvu's alex savidge is on bethel island now with more about this red flag warning, alex, and how firefighters all over the state are preparing for it. >> reporter: well, good morning. there was a brush fire here on

bethel island last night that was started by an -- by an arcing power line. this fire burned close to several homes after it broke out late last night. but firefighters were able to get the flames under control before any of them were damaged. in the end, about five acres were charred here. this is just off bethel island road near gateway road. the fire broke out at 8:00 and this morning crews were out here spraying water on some of the hot spots out here. firefighters are worried about more firefighters like this one as a red flag warning is now in place. it went into effect at midnight covering most of the inland portions of the bay area. and that means conditions are ideal for large fires to break out. the forecast is for thunderstorms, bringing winds of more than 25 miles per hour and the possibility of dry lightning. the brush, of course, is already extremely dry right now, which is why crews here in eastern contra costa county are

prepared for a busy day. >> it's very easy to have multiple fires burning across the district at the same time which we're already -- we're already spread very thin with five stations cover, the area. that will add -- covering the area. that will add additional hamper to the district. >> reporter: this is a district already struggling with a staffing shortage. last year, because of budget cuts, three fire stations here in east contra costa county were shut down including the one not far away here on bethel island. now, the east contra costa county fire chief said he would certainly like to bring on extra firefighters for a red flag day like this one but he says he doesn't have anyone to call in. his department is already stretched thin as it is. you can see crews are out here keeping an eye on hot spots after a brush fire. they are worried about more fires as we move throughout the day. the dangerous fire conditions

library. meetings will be held in la fayette and clayton. a petaluma homeowner has a lot of cleanup to do after a truck drove through the front of her home. this is on cleveland lane near barre road. the chp says a man lost control of his truck early sunday morning, then ran away. they have not been able to fid him. an elderly woman was in the back room at the time and was not hurt. the berkeley man who went on a naked rampage at a b.a.r.t. station will be back in court. he was caught on video in may at the 16th street b.a.r.t. station. he performed acrobatic stunts and is accused of grabbing passengers and kicking a b.a.r.t. employee. earlier he pleaded not guilty and told the court he remembers very little of the incident. his attorney says he was clearly suffering a mental breakdown. 8:05. it's back to school day for thousands of students in san

francisco and the police. they are doing everything possible to make sure they get there safe. tara moriarty joining us live now to tell us more about this school safety campaign. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. well, you know, as a market, you probably -- parent, you probably worry if your child attends school in san francisco, it's a city, there's tons of cars on this street, bryant. we're in front of st. joseph school. we notice a cross guard is out. some motorcycle cops started to show up. they are gonna try to help kids make it to class safely this morning. this is one spot that motorcycle list police will be targeting. there will be traffic operations near most public schools. the focus will be on the elementary school, target, the 15-mile-an-hour school zone -- targeting, the 15-mile-an-hour school zone speed limit. it will last for two hours and then pick up from 1:30 to 3:30 this afternoon.

settled. over the weekend, the union representing nearly 1800 a.c. transit workers rejected the tentative contract agreement reached earlier this month. those union workers include bus drivers, mechanics, dismatch -- kiss -- dispatchers. >> pretty strong no vote. >> what does that say? >> that says we want something better. >> willing to strike for it? >> i'm willing to do what the union does? >> union leaders say they will meet soon to review their options. a.c. transit management is not commenting until it gets official notice about the union vote. well, east bay commuters really remember how a.c. transit helped thousands get across the bay during the four- bay b.a.r.t. strike last month. there's still a threat of another b.a.r.t. shutdown in october. b.a.r.t. and the unions have not had any

contract talks since the judge ordered a 60-day cooling off period. the two sides are waiting for a mediator to set a new schedule so talks with continue. there's been a lot of talk about the salary and the benefits of b.a.r.t. workers during this very bitter lanor dispute -- labor dispute. but today's chronicle reports b.a.r.t. managers are among the highest paid in the country. the general manager recordedly earnslele it 325,000 a year. the deputy managers make about $200,000 each according report. b.a.r.t. managers deny they are overpaid and say they need to hold down worker costs to pay for system improvements. silicon valley is seeing a commercial real estate boom. santa clara and san mateo county developers are building or renovating more than 6 million square feet of office space. that's twice as much as last year and more than one third of

there's word that former president hosni mubarak may be freed from jail sometime this week. there was no legal -- no longer any grounds to hold him for a corruption case where mubarak and his two sons were accused of embaez -- embezzling money for the presidential palace. mubarak had been released in two other court cases against him. the violence goes on. there are reports, islamic militants ambushed two buses carrying police officers in northern egypt this morning and killed 25 of them. almost 1,000 have been killed in clashes between government security forces and supporters of former president mohammed morsi since last wednesday. lawmakers are debating what

welcome back. just about 8:29. here's a picture for you as we say good morning. looking live over san francisco. way off -- that's sutro tower. but look at all of the fog out there. it's a pretty dramatic picture. just wanted to show you that this morning. good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather, traffic. we're going to steve. how is it looking? >> it looks very interesting for the next couple of days. the fog is pretty slow. when it is below sutro's level, very warm air aloft. the warm air combining with this low taking a lot of moisture and sending it from nevada and points east back toward us. the lightning is the key. i think all the way into thursday morning because of the possible fire danger.

so the red flag warning continues. 70s already. inland it will be another hot day. the cloud cover will take the edge off. temperatures by the coast will be 30, 35 degrees cooler. look at the cloud cover, already taking right aim towards the north bay. i would say about san francisco, oakland, crockett, concord north but some of that will start to fill in on the east bay. south bay, machine. but they are getting a due south wid. some of that thunderstorm activity looks to be on the wane right now but i think it will pick up later coming up from the san joaquin valley. fog, some sun. but a lot of clouds starting to roll in. it will be warm, muggy inland. temperatures starting off 60s and 70s. unless it turns cloudy and then it might drop 5, 10 degrees. i think the south is fine. it's the north bay. here's sal. we're looking at slow traffic still in many areas. we're gone start in the south bay -- we are gonna start in the south bay. northbound 2280 has been busy -- 280 has been busy.

northbound 17 traffic will be slow approaching the 880 interchange. bay bridge toll plaza, also continues to be slow. getting up to 880 northbound and southbound. you can tell southbound 8 yea 0 is slow passing -- 880 is slow passing the coliseum. we're looking at the improvement. i just looked up and noticed that 280 has cleared out. this is good news for you. we were talking about how heavy it is and now it's much better getting up to highway 17. we want to mention there was a truck fire this morning on batten avenue in oakland. this is at the port of oakland. oakland fire department put it out before anyone was injured. the crash has been moved out of the way. but you can see the truck here, at least the cab of it, is completely destroyed. our crew happened to be on the scene. no one was injured. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. happening now -- about two dozen truck drivers walking a picket line outside of the port of oakland. the protest started at about 6:00 this morning.

the truck drivers are blocking the main entrance and exit to that busy port near jack london square in oakland. the drivers are angry about working conditions, port regulations and several other issues. >> no vacation, nothing. nobody have it. you guys all day you work, vl not making money. it has to stop. everybody need to stop over here. >> well, the drivers say they've sent a letter to oakland mayor jean quan but so far have not received a response from the mayor's office. a spokesperson for the family of hannah anderson, the young woman kimed recently, is expected to give more information today about a memorial service for her brother and mother. anderson was allegedly kidnapped by james dim di -- james dimaggoi, a family friend.

he set the home on fire and took off with hannah. we're now hear hear -- hearing from the attorney for the first victim to receive a settlement in the jerry sandusky trial. he says his client is expected to receive the money within a month. the exact amount has not been disclosed but it is said to be several million dollars. this is the first settlement for penn state since sandusky was suspected of molesting young boys. >> penn state wanted to and we succeeded in inking a deal which would allow the university to move forward and would allow my client to have some closure and finality. >> this was just one of 26 civil suits that have been filed against penn state by victims and their families following sandusky's conviction. the school society aside $60 million for anticipated

settlements. san diego mayor bob filner will be back on the job today after two weeks of behavioral therapy following several accusations of sexual harassment. >> bob, must go! >> the people who want mayor filner to resign, they were rallying outside of city hall. they were trying to gather more than a hundred thousand signatures to get a recall measure on a ballot. those collecting vigs think they -- signatures think they will be successful. >> you can see them coming in, if they feel as strong as we do -- i voted for him. >> you did? >> i voted for hill. i'm very, very disgusted. >> 16 women have come forward accusing mayor filner of making inappropriate comments or sexual advances. he's apologized for his behavior but has refused to step down. five people with ties to the south bay are arrested in the kidnapping of a southern california woman. ktvu tea janine de la vega is

live -- ktvu's janine de la vega is live with the charges they face with allegedly trying to force a young woman into prostitution. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. these are serious charges that they face. all of the suspects are from san jose and here in gilroy. we were trying to track down family members and people that knew the suspects. one of them we're told lives in the -- used to live or knows family that is in the apartment complex behind me. they need that he was in jail. but they wouldn't say much more or give me a reaction of what they thought. let's go to some video of what we have from riverside county. sheriff's deputies say 20-year- old ana ceja is a prostitute who helped four armed men kidnap an 18-year-old girl on the streets in campton. authorities say she was sexual assaulted by two men and driven to a best western hoe well in moreno valley. when the men were dick distracted, the victim es--

when the men were distracted, the victim escaped to the lobby and they called the police. brothers ibrahim and khalik binhajjyahyaabulmalik of gilroy and abdubakr horrington and jerry landers also from gilroy were arrested. they were booked along with a female suspect under numerous charges, including kidnapping, attempted pimping and sexual assault. now, something that i want to clarify, when i knocked on the door of the apartment complex behind me and showed the mugshot to the family there, they recognized the name of abdubakr horrington but they said that was not his name. bun of the gentleman identified him -- one of the gentleman identified himself as abdubakr horrington saying, yes, that's family we know him. but riverside county sheriff's deputies have the wrong name. we're still trying to get to the bottom of it, trying to find out if somebody stole somebody's identity. if we learn anything we will learn it later in the newscast.

janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. today, political leaders from california and nvgd will gather for the 17th annual tahoe summit. al gore is scheduled to give the keynote speech at nevada's sand harbor state park. one issue up for discussioning will be finding -- discussion will be finding private money. the summit follows tensions between california and nevada. and the drinking water problem may be blamed on the san luis reservoir. they report the reservoir is just 17% full. the water needs more treatment to stop the spread of algae, causing the water to smell and taste musty. officials say a dry spring and pumping restrictions in the delta are responsible for the low water level.

firefighters in sacramento came to the rescue. they saved the life of a deer that almost drowned. the deer got stranded out there in the water, struggled to climb a steep concrete wall. well, the fire department launched a boat, crews used ropes to pull it to safety. that deer was finally able to stand on its own and it will recover before going back out in the wild. sonoma county, yes, i hear you -- sonoma county is reminding pet owners to vaccinate your dogs and cats against rabbis. the county is launching a campaign emphasizing preventing rabies. health officials say rabies is rare but it's almost always fatal in humans and pets once the symptoms appear. 8:38. a growing number of marin parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children despite the concerns of health officials. the marin independent journal reports 7.8% of parents opted out of the immunizations last year.

that's a big increase from 2005 when just over 4% of parents chose not to vaccinate. california is one of 20 states that allows parents to opt out of vaccinating their child for kindergarten if the immunizations violate their personal belief. and some teachers are preparing new and different lessons for students returning to school this month. many educators are starting to work with the new common core state standards. that's the name for the curriculum the state will require teachers to use starting in 2015. it includes, knowledge and skills, top educators say students will need to succeed in college and the work force. retailers say families appear to be spending less on back-to-school shopping. the national retail federation says the average per student spending is 6 $635 this year -- is $635 this year and that's down 8% from last year.

shopping setters say sales at chain stores have been lackluster and varies from week to week instead of the usual steady stream that's more common this time of year. google now teaming up with napa valley college and creating an indoor map of the main campus. the nbc google indoor maps will provide details of the building floor plans also maps of indoor spaces it will not have a 3-d virtual tour inside campus buildings. that completed project is due to be available online about the first of the year. two bay area universities are among the top producers of successful entrepreneurs in america. crunch base says more stanford students have created successful corporations than any other school in the country. more than 350 former stanford students including snap krats, evan spiegel and bobby murphy founded business success stories. harvard ranks number two, with

the scene. we'll have an update for you as soon as we get more information. this comes after a violent weekend where 12 people were shot. back thaw school day for thundershowers -- for thousands of students in san francisco. motorcyclists are out making sure they do everything to make sure they get their safely. tara moriarty is joining us live to talk more about the school safety campaign, tara. >> reporter: motorcycle cops are fanning out all over san francisco today. they will be hanging out in the areas where the crosswalks are near schools to make sure that kids get to school safely. joining me live is this officer. we were at 10th and howard a short time ago. what's going on? >> the police department is conducting an enforcement around schools in san francisco to remind people they must abide by the 15-mile-an-hour speed limit rules in effect around all city schools this morning. >> reporter: how long will they be doing this for? >> 7:00 to 9:00 this morning and from 1:30 to 3:30 today and

sunnyvale the same thing. if you are driving to mountain view, highway 101, traffic is slow northbound. 8:47. let's go to steve. >> thank you. some fog out there. very warm air aloft. low 80s get up to 18002,000 feet -- 1800, 2,000 feet. possibility of lightning. a red flag warning out probably into thursday. 70s and 80s in the interior. a lot of cloud cover streaming in off the sierra coming up from a low. 70s on the temperatures. i don't think it will be hot like yesterday. it will still be warm and muggy for many. the lightning seems to be calming down. coming down the sierra wrapping back around you can see some of that moisture or rain main lib in the cloud cover moving into the north and east bay. south bay peninsula, parts of it mostly sunny although very muggy, humid for many. a lot of this cloud cover will be with us today. the low is not going anywhere

from maybe thursday, friday. fog, sun, clouds, very warm to hot inland. especially the farther north you go, a lot of fog near the coast. possibility of showers. 60s to 90s. again a lot of this cloud cover could take the edge off some of these temperatures. i think things look to be pretty warm to toasty for another day. it will start to cool down as we head into midweek. maybe lingering showers on thursday morning, then we go into a quieter cooler pattern. let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories -- as you heard steve just say, that red flag warning is in effect. it covers most of the bay area today because of that risk of dry lightning. a lot of the east bay and the north bay, parts of san mateo county and the santa cruz mountains may see thunderstorms. steve in -- steve, the forecasters say this just raises the chance of a fire. a.c. transit workers now considering their next move in a contract dispute that a lot of commuters

thought was already settled. over the weekend, the union representing almost 1800 workers rejected the tentative contract agreement that was reached earlier this month. today we're gonna find out more about what's happened the night that limousine caught fire on. san mateo bridge killing five women. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now with details of what will be happening today. pam? >> a news conference today will discuss the investigation into that deadly limo fire. nine friends were out celebrating the marriage of one of them when the limo burst into flames on the san mateo bridge on may 4th. four of the women and the driver of the car managed to escape but five other women, including the new bride were killed. that investigation has discussed the driver's actions during the fire and evacuation. there are also questions as to whether or not he was on the phone at the time and possibly having an argument with his wife. there are also some questions about the condition of the limo, a 1999 town car.

8:53. we're following breaking news for you. two people have been shot to death in oakland. ktvu's brian flores just arrived on the scene. you are back now. what do you know, brian? >> hi, dave. good morning. well, from early indications this appears to be a homicide but from what our understanding in talking to neighbors. it may be a murder-suicide. talking to neighbors, not confirmed by police. you are looking at the coroner's van, leaving the scene of the 4100 block of fruitvale avenue. talking to neighbors, not confirmed by police, from what we understand a father and his parapledgic daughter lived here at fruitvale avenue. they lived here for several years. talking to neighbors they say that the father became upset over the situation, couldn't
